Blogger, friend or foe?

I think all assignments, regardless of what type they are, take some getting used too for people. After getting used to the blog I think it was one of the most enjoyable assignments that I ever had to do for a class. Not for the reason of doing the excess work, but for the simple reason that it was done with each other. You get to know a little more about people than you would just sitting in class with them. Assignments would be carried over in to conversation topics outside of class as well. I thought the fact that the one girl from our class even had a job offer from the simple reason that the person that happened to read her blog liked the way she wrote.
In life, you never really know where it is going to take you. I have understood that if you start to look at things as more of a privilege than a task, the easier it is to like. People all over the world are dying for the opportunity that we have to get to go to school. For me to complain about some little assignment once week would be selfish and unappreciative of the opportunity that I have been blessed with.
The blog has been a good way of reviewing what has happened in class, talk to your classmates about it, and get some feedback to look at your interpretation from a different light that you would never thought of. God willing this blog will be one of the ways in which I will keep in touch with the people that I have met in this class.
I always thought about my vision for the future, without this blog I would've never put it down in writing to the point where I actually planned step-by-step to get to my vision. That was the second part of the vision process, the planning. The planning phase to get me to the action phase. Maybe this was the way that life guided me to get another stage in my vision completed.
I like the fact that we were in complete control of 20% of our grade without having to study for anything. Just a little bit of effort took you a long way in your grade and I love that. All in all, great job on the blog Kurpis. Don't change anything about it and it should be one of the things that your course should be known for. You think outside the box and this is an example of practicing what you preach, this assignment is a good "purple cow."

  1. I didn't consider the "Vision" assignment when I wrote my entry. The point you make about how this blog helped you cement the vision you had for your future really proves that this blog has been beneficial. Not only did it help us by having us re-look at the class activities but it also forced us to set goals which is the first step in achieving them.

  2. It is true that I was skeptical about the blog assingments thing at first because I didn't know anything about the blog. I didn't even know how to create a blog. Besides, I have been writing things on another site(korean version of facebook) for quite some time. So why bother to create another one? And then something happened. I found myself saying that" hmm, this blog thing is not that bad." The blog assingments helped me organize my thoughts about what I learned through class activities and helped me know more about classmates. I also agree with you about the complaints. I understand that some classmates complained about the blog and even the test. But didn't we have the same oppurtunity to try? We were given the same materials to study and were given the same time limit for the homework and the test. We all had the equal chance. Besides, we still had one more chance. The final! I wish you guys good luck.

  3. You're right Edmond, something really special does happens when we put pen to paper - saying that I will pursue my goals is alot different than actually putting them on paper and legitametly planning and taking the action needed to realize those goals. It is an interesting point that you make by looking at the assignemnt as a priveledge rather than as a task. Perception can either hurt you or help you, and for me in this case, being able to be grateful for an opportunity to express myself so freely and creatively, ultimately enabled me to open up and connect with others. It has been an amazing ride, however, I am convinced that Kurpis has sparked a force in us for semesters to come. BABAGHANOOOJ!!!

  4. Well said, blogging can definitely create opportunities. In the day and age that we live, day to day activities have come to depend on all forms of social media. It is a great way to communicate ideas.

I had much the same reaction when we were asked to write about our visions. There are so many things that I want out of life, but to actually sit down and conscientiously pick just three really put things into perspective. I also agree that the blog assignment should stay the same; it is rewarding to have an assignment and feel like you’ve really learned or accomplished something afterwards. And of course being in control of a good part of your grade doesn’t hurt either! Great post Edmond!

  5. you really took this assignment to heart. That is great to see. some students just looked at this assignment as "another nuisance" and just tried to B.S. their way through it. I really enjoyed reading your blogs. You have a great head on your shoulders. Good luck to you in your future.

  6. I definitely agree with you when you say that Professor Kurpis thought outside the box! I mean yeah, at times it was annoying writing a blog, however I really did end up learning a lot from this assignment and moreover, through this class.

  7. you really were insightful when you were talking about how instead of complaining about this annoying assignment- we should be thankful. I think you are completely right. I think a lot of times we get caught up in ourselves and don't remember what is going on in the world. Yes, this blog may have seemed like a hassle to me but it was a part of my greater goal to graduate from this school and therefore necessary. Everything has a purpose and we should not lose sight of that or our goals.
